About Me

My name is Tanya Shew. I am an experienced British freelance translator, specialising above all in legal and business documents. However, I also work with medical/pharmaceutical/scientific documents and am fully trained to translate patents and architectural documents.

My language pairs are English (both Great Britain and American variants) and Spanish (International sort), being fully bilingual in both. I am also a proofreader for English and Spanish documents.

I am a British linguist holding a Bachelor of Arts in English Philology from the Spanish National Distance University (UNED).

At the beginning of my career I worked as receptionist, secretary, legal secretary, sales executive and developed all of these positions into a translating/interpreting position.

Being fully bilingual, born in Spain with English parents, has given me the advantage I needed to specialize in translating. I have a great eye for detail, always loved languages as far as I can remember and have always thought language jokes to be the funniest.

In 2006 I began working for a top English law firm in Málaga as a legal secretary providing support to the team of Spanish Personal Injury lawyers, which involved a great deal of translating legal documentation from Spanish into English and vice versa. In 2010, I was offered the opportunity to also join the Litigation team, which gave me insight into further areas of the law.

I have experience in court interpreting, as well as consecutive interpreting at notary offices, medical consultancies, etc.

I have successfully completed translation courses in the following fields:

Quality assurance I use CAT tools to verify errors in dates, measurements and numbers, extra spaces or dots, inconsistencies, untranslated sentences and many other parameters and I always run a spell and grammar check in MS Word. Should there be any errors in the delivered document, I will be happy to correct them.

Rates I charge per source word, which means that you will know the final price before you give me the go-ahead.
The rate will depend on the complexity of the text and the file format. This way a general Word document will cost lest than a highly specialized text in a non-editable format, such as PDF or JPEG.

Rush charge I can generally deliver a 1000 or 1500 word job in 24 hours but should you need it sooner or if it is a larger project with a tight deadline, the rush charge may be applied.
I am registered with the Spanish Tax Office and charge 21% VAT for clients based in Spain (except the Canary Islands). EU clients are not subject to VAT if registered in the EU VIES database.

I can normally produce a 1000 word document in 24 hours. However, depending on my workload at a certain moment in time, I may be able to increase this to 3000 words per day, but this may involve the application of the rush charge. Please do not hesitate to contact me for more information.

I encourage payment by bank transfer if possible, because of the charges associated with Paypal, but we note that Paypal may be the only viable option for clients residing out of Europe.

I accept many types of formats such as MS Word, Pages (for Mac), Excel, Numbers (for Mac), PDF, JPEG, Tiff or even paper documents.
Should you have an other document and are unsure of whether I accept the format, please do not hesitate to drop me a line. I deliver translations in standard MS Word and Excel format, unless you specifically require any other.

I may be contacted from Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 21:00pm (GMT+2 during the summer months and GMT+1 during the rest of the year).
I may also be contacted during Weekends, but I cannot assure an immediate response.
